Alexa Fairness in AI call for proposals - Spring 2021
Alexa AI-Natural Understanding’s (NU) mission is to build and enable engaging, world-class conversational AI capabilities that are broadly accessible. Under this call for proposals, we are seeking to fund research projects on the following topics: Transparency, explainability, and accountability in AI systems Theories of computational/algorithm fairness and factors that affect algorithmic trustworthiness Detecting and ameliorating adverse biases in data and algorithms, and fairness-aware design of algorithms Metrics and methods for designing, piloting, and evaluating systems that mitigate against adverse biases and ensure fairness, including the use of human-machine collaboration and decision support Timeline Submission period: 3/22 - 4/23 Decision letters will be sent out August 2021 Award details Selected Principal Investigators (PIs) may receive the following: Unrestricted funds, no more than $80,000 USD on average AWS Promotional Credits, no more than $40,000 USD on average Training resources, including AWS tutorials and hands-on sessions with Amazon scientists and engineers Awards are structured as one-year unrestricted gifts. The budget should include a list of expected costs specified in USD, and should not include administrative overhead costs. The final award amount will be determined by the awards panel. Proposal requirements PIs are encouraged to exemplify how their proposed techniques or research studies will apply to tasks in natural language understanding, natural language generation, speech and speaker recognition and/or computer vision. PIs should either include plans for open source contributions or state that they do not plan to make any open source contributions (data or code) under the proposed effort. Proposals for this CFP should be prepared according to the proposal template and are encouraged to be a maximum of 4 pages, not including Appendices. Selection criteria ARA will make the funding decisions based on the creativity and quality of the scientific content, and potential impact to the research community and society at large. 1st FBRC at Lahore Campus
FAST Business Research Conference (FBRC) was hosted by FAST School of Management on November 14, 2019 at Lahore campus. The research conference themed “Contemporary Challenges in Business Environment of Emerging Economies”. The Punjab Minister for Higher Education and Information Technology, Mr. Raja Yasir Humayun graced the occasion as the Chief Guest. Dr. Hamid Hassan, Director Campus and Dr. Zafar Iqbal, HoD FSM delivered keynote speeches on ‘Dimensions of Faculty Scholarship’. The organizing committee comprised of Dr. Ahmed Arif, Dr. Mian Muhammad Atif and Ms. Fatima Habib. 68 submissions for the conference were subjected to double blind peer review. On the conference day, 35 successful papers were presented in eight parallel sessions. A panel discussion was also organized on the selected theme. The conference secured a collaboration with ‘South Asian Journal of Business Studies’ and ‘Journal of Business and Economic Analysis’.
IEEE ICET Conference at Peshawar Campus
15th International Conference on Emerging Technologies 2019 (ICET’19) was held on December 2-3, 2019 at Peshawar Campus under the technical umbrella of IEEE. Mr. Kamran Khan Bangash, Special Assistant to Chief Minister and Mr. Duminda Wijesekera of George Mason University, USA were the keynote speakers. Several government officials, representatives from NUST, CUST, COMSATS, KPITB, NRTC, KPEZMC, KPCERC, NUCES-FAST, PIEAS, AIT Austria and Michigan Tech University of USA attended the conference. A large number of submissions were received with an acceptance rate of 20.7%.
IEEE INMIC 2019 Conference at Islamabad Campus
The 22nd IEEE International Multi-Topic Conference 2019 (IEEE INMIC 2019) was held at National University of Computer & Emerging Sciences from November 29 - 30, 2019 at Islamabad campus. A large number of submissions were received with an acceptance rate of 23%. The conference program included 63 accepted papers along with invited talks from 18 eminent professionals on contemporary research on the conference topics. Professor Zhi Jin from Peking University, China and Professor Nasir Rajpoot from University of Warwick, UK were the keynote speakers at the event. While speaking at the opening ceremony, Dr. Sajid Baloch, Guest of Honour of the conference emphasized the need of industry-driven research in Pakistan. Group photo of the participants and organizers of INMIC 2019 Dr. Zohaib Iqbal, conference chair and Director ORIC, presented the conference statistics. He also highlighted the various initiatives of ORIC at NUCES for making it the hub of research and innovation activities in Pakistan. In his welcome note, Dr. Waseem Ikram, Director Islamabad campus welcomed the participants and highlighted the role of the university in achieving academic and research excellence. The Rector NUCES emphasized the need for quality research in academia that is linked to solving local industrial problems. He also appreciated the excellent efforts of the conference organizers and thanked the participants.

Establishment of Smart Video Surveillance Lab
NUCES Karachi campus has been awarded 39.1 million rupees to establish a “Smart Video Surveillance Lab” under "National Center for Big Data and Cloud Computing (NCBC)”. Prof. Dr. Muhammad Atif Tahir, and Dr. Nouman Durrani are PI and Co-PI in this project. This center is the first of its kind in Pakistan. This centre is worth of 1.5 billion and will be hosted by LUMS and will comprise of 12 ‘Affiliated’ Labs at 11 Universities around the country including LUMS, EME College, PNEC, UETL, UETP, ITU, SZABIST, NUCES, CECOS, Ziauddin University, and UAF. Pakistan’s many leading Analytics and Cloud researchers will be working on various key problems related to data analysis in the country.

Interested entities should be on Active Taxpayers List (ATL) of Federal Board of Revenue (FBR) with professional management team and prior relevant experience as mentioned in the RFP document.
